TIPOFF TIME
Pandemic Cancels Big West Tournament
The 2020 Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® Big West Tournament was cancelled on March 12 as conferences throughout the country stopped competition, out of an abundance of caution in response to the threat of COVID-19 or coronavirus.
None of the previous 44 men’s tournaments had experienced a cancellation, but in the interest of preserving the well-being of Big West student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media, the conference’s Board of Directors made the unprecedented decision. The Board later cancelled the remainder of the spring schedule on March 13.
NCAA Cancels Winter, Spring Championships
The NCAA followed suit on the afternoon of March 12 with the cancellation of the men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. Per the NCAA, “This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
