Final Baseball Weekly Awards Handed Out For 2019

CHRISTIAN KOSS, UC IRVINE – BASEBALL FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Finishing the month of May with a .500 average, UC Irvine junior Christian Koss earned Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week after extending his hitting streak to 15 games.

• The shortstop hit .500 (10-for-20) over four games as the Anteaters went 3-1 and ended their season with an impressive 37-17 record.

• Koss culminated the week with a 6-for-6 effort against UC Riverside in a 22-7 victory, tying the program’s single-game record and becoming just the third Anteater to accomplish the feat. Two of his hits came via a double and a home run.

• He also scored a program single-game record six runs in Saturday’s win. He also walked and stole his team-leading 11th base.

• Koss went 2-for-5 with a double and another stolen base in Friday’s 3-1 loss.

• Koss had a triple and two RBIs in Tuesday’s 7-4 win over USC.

• He also made several spectacular defensive plays over the weekend as the ‘Eaters finished the season with the fewest errors in program history.

RODNEY BOONE, UC SANTA BARBARA – CO-BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

• Freshman Rodney Boone helped UC Santa Barbara to its first conference title in 33 years, garnering Big West Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.

• In a winner-take-all game against Cal Poly for the Big West’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, Boone shut down the Mustang offense over 8.1 innings in a 7-0 win.

• He allowed just five hits, walked three and struck a career-high 12 batters as UCSB captured the Big West crown for the first time since 1986.

• Boone improved to 8-0 on the season as he struck out at least one batter in all but two innings.

ISAIAH NUNEZ, CSUN – CO-BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

• Closing out his collegiate career in dominant fashion, CSUN senior Isaiah Nunez notched Big West Baseball Co-Pitcher of the week accolades with a complete game shutout.

 • The southpaw tossed a five-hitter against Cal State Fullerton to earn the 1-0 shutout on the final day of the season.

• It was his first career shutout as he tied a career high with eight strikeouts. He became the first CSUN pitcher since 2002 to win eight games in a season.

• In blanking the Titans, CSUN earned its first shutout over CSF since 1991.

• Nunez threw a season-high 126 pitches, including 30 in the first inning when he escaped a bases loaded jam.

• He retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced including the last six in a row.
