Junior Tre’ Coggins (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Air Force) dented the record books for Cal State Fullerton as the scoring machine earned his second Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award.
The 6-2 guard averaged 33.0 points in two games to help the Titans split the opening weekend of conference play.
Coggins tied his career high with 25 points to aid a big second-half comeback in Thursday’s 79-73 victory at UC Riverside. He made four three-pointers, including the go-ahead triple with 1:20 remaining that gave CSF its first lead of the night.
He then obliterated his career-high, erupting for 41 points in an 85-75 loss to CSUN on Saturday. The total ranked second in the school’s single-game record book, and was the first 40-point effort by a Big West player since Corey Hawkins of UC Davis in January of 2013.
Coggins tied a Big West single-game free throw percentage record as he connected on all 17 attempts, just the second player in league history to do so. He knocked down six three-pointers and shot 47.6 percent (10-for-21) overall from three-point range for the week. Coggins also posted a .957 (22-for-23) free throw percentage for the two games.
Others nominated: Reese Morgan (Cal Poly); Kendall Smith (CSUN); Justin Bibbins (Long Beach State); Josh Fox (UC Davis); Luke Nelson (UC Irvine); Jaylen Bland (UC Riverside); Stefan Jankovic (Hawai‘i)
