Torres Hits First Career Home Run

Slamming her first career collegiate home run in a series sweep over Cal Poly, freshman LT Torres (Tracy, Calif./Kimball HS) gave Long Beach State solid production from the nine hole as the Big West Softball Field Player of the Week.

Down 1-0 entering the fifth, Torres pulled a pitch down the right field line for a two-run home run and a 2-1 49er lead, which held up as the eventual winning runs.  She provided an RBI single in a 7-4, game two win, and registered a three-hit performance in LBSU’s 8-3 win to end the weekend.  Torres also scored her second run of the series in that victory.

Torres posted a .667 slugging percentage for the week.

Others nominated: Samantha Vandiver (Cal State Fullerton); Katie Hooper (CSUN); Lauryn Saunders (UC Davis); Arianna Palomares (UC Santa Barbara); Ulu Matagiese (Hawai‘i)

Clermont Wins Three Straight Decisions

Earning her conference-leading fourth Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week award this season, Long Beach State sophomore Christina Clermont (Carlsbad, Calif./Syracuse) won all three games for the 49ers in a road sweep of Cal Poly.

In 18.0 innings of work, Clermont allowed just four runs and 11 hits while walking four and striking out eight.  She posted a 1.56 ERA in her three appearances.

Clermont went the distance with four strikeouts in a series-opening 2-1 triumph.  Entering a tie game in the sixth inning of game two, Clermont provided four innings of one-hit relief to allow the 49ers to erupt for three runs in the ninth and secure a 7-4 extra innings victory.

The right-hander tossed her 17th complete game of the season in the series finale as the 49ers emerged 8-3 victors.  Clermont yielded six hits and struck out two in the outing.

Clermont has been the winning pitcher in each of LBSU’s last 12 victories.

Others nominated:
Christina Washington (Cal State Fullerton); Zoe Conley (CSUN); Leah Munden (UC Davis); Lena Mayer (UC Santa Barbara); Brittany Hitchcock (Hawai‘i)
