Cal Poly sophomore Elise Krieghoff and UC Davis junior Taylor Jern secured Big West Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week accolades with outstanding performances in season-opening wins.
Krieghoff Explodes For Four Goals In Road Win
Cal Poly forward Elise Krieghoff (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) earned Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors as she collected 11 points on five goals and an assist in two victories.
The sophomore posted a goal and an assist in a 3-0 Mustang win over Loyola Marymount in Friday’s season opener. Krieghoff then shifted into another gear, erupting for a career-high four goals in a 5-2 road triumph against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday. She reeled off three of those goals in a 32-minute span in the second half, transforming a 2-2 tie into the final 5-2 advantage.
Krieghoff’s four goals was one off the school record for most in a game. It was the most goals by a Mustang since Kara Grondzik posted a hat trick against Tulsa on Sept. 19, 1999. Krieghoff is only the ninth player in Big West history to score at least four goals in a match, and the first since UC Santa Barbara’s Jennifer Borcich accomplished the feat on Sept. 10, 2004.
Others nominated: Haley Hughes (UC Davis); Natalia Ledezma (UC Irvine); Tatum Lockett (UC Riverside)
Jern's Lone Save Preserves Shutout Against Rival
UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) captured Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades as she helped the Aggies to a season-opening shutout.
Jern may have made just one save in the Aggies’ 1-0 victory against Causeway Cup rival Sacramento State on Friday. But the save came at a crucial time as she redirected a shot at point blank range to keep the Hornets from evening the score. The shutout was the second of Jern’s career.
