Six Players Nabbed On Day Two Of MLB Draft

UCSB BB Trinkwon Brandon 2013 wind up HZ

Six Big West Conference players were selected on the second day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, joining Cal State Fullerton’s Michael Lorenzen and UC Irvine’s Andrew Thurman, who were picked on day one.

Cal Poly’s Chase Johnson was the first conference student-athlete drafted on day two, going in the third round as the 101st overall pick to the San Francisco Giants.  Johnson finished his junior season in strong fashion, allowing no runs in his last six appearances over 9.1 innings, including 4.1 scoreless frames over three stints in the NCAA Division I Los Angeles Regional.  He did not have a decision this spring and posted a 2.31 ERA with 21 strikeouts and nine walks over 23.1 innings.

Titan Chad Wallach followed as the 142nd selection (5th round) by the Miami Marlins.  Fullerton’s starting catcher for the majority of the season entered Super Regional play batting .303, driving in 32 RBIs with 47 hits, 13 doubles, one triple and two home runs.

Brandon Trinkwon was the first UC Santa Barbara Gaucho nabbed in the MLB First-Year Player Draft as the Los Angeles Dodgers selected the All-Big West Second Team member in the 7th round as the 214th pick. He finished the year with a .280 average and a .367 on-base percentage. Trinkwon tallied a .968 fielding percentage in 2013, and at one point had an 18-game errorless streak.

The Cleveland Indians picked UC Riverside’s Trevor Frank as the 231st selection in the 8th round.  Frank posted a 4-2 record on the season with a 2.45 ERA, 10 saves, 44 strikeouts and just nine walks in 44.0 innings of work.

Carlos Lopez joins teammate Wallach with the Miami Marlins organization, going in the 10th round as the 292nd pick. Lopez, the Big West Co-Field Player of the Year, leads the Titans in several offensive categories this season including; batting average (.335), runs scored (51), hits (76), and stolen bases (15). In addition, Lopez has totaled 11 doubles, three triples and four home runs while driving in 34 runs.

The final Big West player taken on day two of the draft was Long Beach State’s Shane Carle, who was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 10th round selection, 299th overall.  The Friday-night starter posted a 3.57 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 93.1 innings of work.

The final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 starting at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific).
