Long Beach State senior James Ennis and UC Davis sophomore Corey Hawkins represented the Big West on the 25-member 2013 Lou Henson Mid-Major All-American Team Monday.
Both players are eligible for the Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. Named after the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach who became one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four, the 2013 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four.
Ennis (Ventura, Calif./Ventura College), the 2012-13 Big West Player of the Year, had an outstanding season in which he averaged 16.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. The 6-7 guard/forward ranked fifth in scoring, ninth in rebounding and third in steals among Big West players. He also placed in the Big West top 10 in field goal percentage (.491 - 8th), free throw percentage (.834 - 4th) and blocked shots (1.3 bpg - 4th).
Ennis gives Long Beach State a mid-major All-American for the third straight season. Two-time Big West Player of the Year Casper Ware received acclaim in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
It is the sixth straight year that at least one Big West player has been named a Mid-Major All-American by CollegeInsider.com.
Hawkins (Goodyear, Ariz./Arizona State) spearheaded a nine-win turnaround from the previous season in his first UC Davis campaign. The 2012-13 Big West Newcomer of the Year became the program's first Big West scoring champion after averaging 20.3 points per game. He led the league with 15 games of 20 points or more, topped off with a career-high and Big West single-season high 40 point effort against Hawaii on Jan. 19. Hawkins was also one of the conference's top three-point and free throw shooters, ranking No. 10 in three-point percentage (.400) and No. 2 in free throw percentage (.842). A two-time Big West Player of the Week, Hawkins scored 569 points in 2012-13 after transferring from Arizona State.
The selection of Ennis and Hawkins as mid-major All-Americans gives the Big West two representatives for the third straight season.
