Senior Kamilah Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) claimed Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades after averaging a double-double and helping Hawai‘i defeat its first Big Ten opponent since 1998.

Jackson posted averages of 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds as the Rainbow Wahine rebounded from an opening game loss to Colorado State to topple Chattanooga (60-55) and Minnesota (77-71 in OT) for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown tournament title.

It was the first tournament championship for the UH program since winning the 2004 Waikiki Beach Marriott Invitational.  In addition, the win over the Gophers represented UH’s first triumph over the Big Ten since knocking off Ohio State on Dec. 14, 1998.

Jackson, a 5-11 forward, played all 45 minutes in the Minnesota win as she scored 18 points with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with two assists and a steal.  She fueled the team with five of the first six points in overtime.

Jackson had a team-high 17 points and a season-high 16 caroms in the overtime loss to the Rams.  Against Chattanooga, Jackson topped the squad with 17 points, 11 rebounds and a season-high five assists.  She moved into No. 5 on UH’s all-time scoring list at 1,325 points after becoming the second ‘Bow to reach 1,000 career rebounds last week.

She now owns a streak of six consecutive double-doubles, and has led the team in rebounding in every game this year.

Others nominated: Molly Schlemer (Cal Poly); Samantha Logan (Cal State Fullerton); Madison Montgomery (Long Beach State); Sydnee Fipps (UC Davis); Camille Buckley (UC Irvine); Simone DeCoud (UC Riverside); Destini Mason (UC Santa Barbara)
