UC Davis sophomore Corey Hawkins received additional accolades for last week's performances with his selection as the Lou Henson National Player of the Week from CollegeInsider.com.
The weekly award goes to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball and is named after the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach who retired with 779 wins after an illustrious 41 year career.
Hawkins established a school single-game scoring record with 40 points in a 93-82 win at Hawai’i Saturday. The 6-3 guard was incredibly efficient in hitting the 40-point mark, doing so on 14 field goal attempts. He connected on 10 of those attempts, including 8 of 9 from three-point range, and drained 12 straight free throw attempts in the final 1:53 to stave off any threat of a Rainbow Warrior comeback.
The eight threes tied a UCD single-game record and tied a UH record for the most allowed to an opponent.
Hawkins also became the first Big West player since the 2008-09 season to score 40 points in a game.
The week began with Hawkins posting 17 points, three rebounds, five assists and four steals in the Aggies' win at Cal State Northridge. The Aggies had not won at The Matadome since Nov. 22, 1986 when both programs competed at the Division II level.
The native of Goodyear, Ariz. hit 18 of 19 free throws for the week, bettering his season free throw percentage to .916, the seventh-best mark in the NCAA.
