Cal Poly junior Mitch Haniger supplied more than half of his team's offense as the Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week, while UC Davis senior Dayne Quist and UC Irvine sophomore Andrew Thurman delivered mound gems to share Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Haniger Belts League-Leading Seventh Home Run Of Season

Mitch Haniger (Santa Clara, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) accounted for more than half of Cal Poly’s offense and had the game-winning RBI in his team’s one win, earning the junior Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week honors.

Haniger scored seven runs and had three RBI in a 1-3 week for the Mustangs.  He hit .556 (10-for-18) with two doubles and a home run, his Big West leading seventh of the season, and posted an .833 slugging percentage.

He posted his second career five-hit game as a Mustang when he went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in a 6-5 loss in Saturday’s game one of a doubleheader.  Haniger smacked a double and a home run in that game, the latter of which gave Cal Poly a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning.

Haniger laced an RBI single in the fifth inning of Saturday’s second game proved to be the game-winning RBI as Cal Poly won 6-1.  He had multiple hits in three of the four games and also stole a base in the series finale against the Matadors.

Quist, Thurman Baffle Opponents

Stellar performances from UC Davis senior Dayne Quist (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz HS) and UC Irvine sophomore Andrew Thurman (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) gave the pair Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Quist improved to 5-0 on the year with an impressive three-hit complete game shutout of Pacific.  It was his third complete game and second shutout of the season.   The southpaw used only 106 pitches in the 1-0 win, retiring 13 straight at one point and allowing only two Tiger runners to advance past first base.

Thurman was equally brilliant as the winning pitcher in UCI’s 4-1 victory over No. 12 Cal State Fullerton.  He no-hit the Titans through eight innings before surrendering an infield single and a walk to start the ninth.  Thurman was nearly perfect through eight, as his defense committed an error in the third.  He finished his stint with eight innings pitched, one hit, one run and one walk allowed, and six strikeouts.
