Three Players Earn Big West Softball Weekly Awards

A successful weekend for Big West softball saw three players claim weekly honors as Long Beach State's Nalani St. Germain was named the Player of the Week, while Ari Cervantes of Cal State Fullerton and Brooke Turner of Long Beach State split the Pitcher of the Week honor.

St. Germain Powers LBSU To 4-1 Mark In San Diego

Nalani St. Germain’s (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) hot bat led Long Beach State to a 4-1 record at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego, netting her Big West Player of the Week honors.

The sophomore batted .571 (8-14) over her five games at the tournament, picking up multi-hit outings on three occasions.

St. Germain’s best efforts came in the 49ers’ three consecutive wins against ranked opponents Houston and Fresno State as well as Big 12 foe Baylor.

She had a homer, three RBI and two steals against the Cougars, 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored against the Bulldogs and topped it off with two hits against the Bears. In all, St. Germain batted .600 (6-10) with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored against those foes.

CSF's Cervantes, LBSU's Turner Claim Share Of Pitching Award

A pair of seniors split this week’s Big West Pitcher of the Week award as Ari Cerventes (Tustin, Calif./Mater Dei HS) of Cal State Fullerton and Brooke Turner (Buena Park, Calif./Kennedy HS) of Long Beach State were honored after stellar weekends.

Cervantes put up a 3-0 record with a 1.08 ERA in her four appearances at the DeMarini Invitational. She posted three complete game wins and held opponents to a .144 batting average.

Her best effort was a three-hit shutout against IPFW and she also allowed just six hits and three runs combined in victories over Southern Miss and Oregon State.

Turner went 3-0 at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, posting a 1.50 ERA over her three appearances.

Turner came out of the bullpen in her first two appearances to great affect, allowing no hits and striking out four in three innings against Brigham Young and two hits with four more K’s over four innings against Houston.

Turner’s third win came in a starting role against Fresno State as she went the distance and allowed just six hits, five runs (three earned), two walks and picked up five strikeouts.
