Mullins Leads Pacific To First Series Sweep In 2010

Marty Mullins, returning from a broken hand, closed out the 2010 season with Big West Player of the Week honors after leading UC Santa Barbara to a sweep over Pacific, the Gauchos first of the season.

In Friday's series opener, Mullins hit a two-run homer and a solo shot in his first two at-bats since his injury. He scored the difference-maker in the seventh inning, leading the Gauchos to a 9-7 victory. The following day Mullins went 2-for-4, again scoring what proved to be the winning run. On Sunday, in his final at-bat in a Gaucho uniform, he hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning to help the Gauchos secure a sweep with the 8-5 win.

He also helped UCSB behind the plate as he called Greg Davis first complete-game on Saturday and on Friday and Sunday the Gaucho starters both went seven innings. For the week, he tallied five runs scored and six RBI, while hitting .545.

Ramirez Stellar On The Mound For Second Straight Week

Cal State Fullertons Noe Ramirez (East Los Angeles, Calif./Alhambra HS) collected his second consecutive Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors after picking up a pair on wins, one over nationally-ranked UCLA and the other over Cal State Northridge.

His win on Tuesday against the Bruins, came in relief for an injured Colin OConnell. The righty came on with runners at the corners and one out, and retired the first two hitters he faced. After hitting a batter to open the fifth inning, Ramirez set down the next six men he faced. In all, he struck out four of the nine men he faced for the win.

In his start on Saturday, Ramirez limited the Matadors to just four hits over eight innings while striking out eight as the Titans clinched their 11th straight series victory. With the win he improved to 10-1, and lowered his ERA from 2.84 to 2.50.

On the week, Ramirez was 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, walking one and striking out 12 over 10.2 innings.

Others nominated: Mark DeVincenzi (Cal Poly), Scott Lyman (UC Davis), Christian Bergman (UC Irvine), Greg Davis (UC Santa Barbara)
