A wild finish to the regular season settled the seeds for the 2010 Big West Men's Basketball Tournament. The 35th edition of the longest running postseason basketball tournament in the west begins on Wednesday, March 10 and culminates with the Saturday, March 13 championship game at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
First round action on Wednesday features No. 5 Cal State Fullerton against No. 8 Cal State Northridge at 6:00 p.m., followed by No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 7 UC Irvine. The Titans missed an opportunity to clinch a top four seed and first round bye after falling 92-86 in overtime to UC Davis on Saturday. The Anteaters miraculously advanced to the tournament with an improbable 91-84 win at Cal Poly on Saturday night, erasing an eight-point deficit with a minute to play. Darren Moore hit two threes in the final nine seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. The UCI win sets up a rematch with Cal Poly at approximately 8:30 pm on March 10.
The UC Davis win vaulted the Aggies into the fourth seed. They join No. 3 Long Beach State with byes into the quarterfinals, which begin on Thursday, March 11. The 49ers will play the lowest remaining seed advancing from the first round. The Aggies take on the highest remaining seed advancing from the first round.
On Friday, March 12, semifinal action commences with Big West co-champions UC Santa Barbara and Pacific taking the court. The top-seeded Gauchos face the lowest remaining seed advancing out of the quarterfinals. The No. 2 Tigers battle the highest remaining seed advancing from the quarterfinals.
