Clutch late game performances by
Gerard Anderson (Los Angeles, Calif./Saddleback JC) spurred Cal State Fullerton to two conference road victories and earned the senior Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.
A 6-6 forward, Anderson scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to propel the Titans to a 72-61 win against UC Irvine on Wednesday. His scoring outburst included three 3-point plays. He added 10 rebounds to cement his third double-double of the year. Anderson made 7 of 10 shots overall and 5 of 7 from the foul line to pace the Titans.
In a game for the ages, Anderson scored a career-high 25 points with seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals in a marathon 113-112 CSF victory that went three overtimes on Saturday.
Anderson had only seven points in regulation, but stepped up with 18 in the final 15 minutes, including 11 in the pivotal third extra stanza after CSF’s other five top scorers had fouled out. He also set up the game-winning shot with a purposeful missed free throw. With the Titans trailing 112-110, Anderson’s miss on his second attempt caromed off to the left side and was rebounded by Eric Williams, who made a short bank shot and was fouled, sinking the winning free throw
The Titans and Matadors combined for 225 points, 75 fouls and 110 free throw attempts with 81 makes. Anderson did his part at the charity stripe, hitting 13 of 17 attempts. He also made 6 of 10 floor shots. The 25 points was his third 20-point performance of the season.
