Duo Shares Weekly Softball Honor, While Freshman Regain Pitching Accolade

The Big West weekly softball honors saw its first tie of the season as Cal State Northridge's Amanda Peek and Long Beach State's Jennifer Griffin shared the Player of the Week award. Meanwhile, it was back to the status quo for the weekly pitching honor as Cal State Fullerton's Christine Hiner claimed the award, the 10th time in 11 weeks the honor has gone to a freshman.

Peek, Griffin Share Player of the Week Honors

Cal State Northridge catcher Amanda Peek (La Cresenta, Calif./Cresenta Valley HS) and Long Beach State infielder Jennifer Griffin (Whittier, Calif./University of Tennessee) shared the Big West Player of the Week honors after stellar performances over the weekend.

Peek opened the conference series against Cal Poly with a homer, double, two RBI and a pair of walks in the Matadors' 8-7 win. She was then walked seven consecutive times, including the last four intentionally, over the final two games. Three of the intentional passes came with runners in scoring position.

Griffin batted .727 (8-11) with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored and a walk in the 49ers' series win over co-league leader UC Santa Barbara. She had multiple hits in all three contests and finished with two RBI in two games. She was also errorless in the field for the third straight week at third base.

Hiner Leads CSF to Key Series Win Over Pacific

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Christine Hiner (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) earned two of the Titans’ three conference wins last weekend on her way to Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.

The freshman, who won her second weekly Big West pitching honor of the season, pitched six scoreless innings in the game two 4-0 win over Pacific. She scattered nine hits, allowed no runs and no walks while striking out five.

Hiner then won the third game in relief, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just three hits, an unearned run, walking one and striking out four in CSF’s come-from-behind 4-3 win.

For the week, Hiner went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10.2 innings of work. She allowed 12 hits, an unearned run, walked one and struck out nine. Her win in game two marked the sixth time this season she had not walked a batter in a start.
