Cal State Northridge junior
Tremaine Townsend (Phoenix, Ariz./Saddleback JC/North HS) captured his second Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week award of 2007-08, producing a pair of double-doubles and, in his first career start, one of the top all-around performances in school history.
The Matadors received career-bests in both points (21) and rebounds (22) from Townsend in their 77-57 win at UC Davis on Saturday. Townsend, who made his first career start against the Aggies, came up just two rebounds shy of the school record. The 22 rebounds was six short of the Big West record while also doubling as a conference single-game high this season. The effort gave him his seventh double-double, tying him for the Big West lead.
To top off the effort against UC Davis, Townsend hit 9 of his 11 shots from the floor and added three blocks and two steals.
The 6-10 center posted another double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in a tough 78-73 overtime loss at Pacific on Thursday. In 38 minutes of reserve duty, Townsend made 5 of 7 floor shots. Townsend also made a three-pointer in each game, accounting for his only treys of the season.
For the week, Townsend averaged 16.5 points and 17.5 rebounds while shooting 77.8 (14 of 18) percent from the field.
Others nominated: Titus Shelton, Cal Poly; Frank Robinson, Cal State Fullerton; Donovan Morris, Long Beach State; Darren Fells, UC Irvine; Chad Troyer, Pacific
