Cal State Fullerton senior
Josh Akognon (Petaluma, CA/Washington State/Casa Grande HS) captured Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors as he bounced back from a subpar shooting effort to produce one of his best overall games, tying a career-high in points against Cal State Bakersfield.
Akognon pelted the Roadrunners with six three-pointers en route to 41 points in the Titans' 87-64 win on Saturday. The 5-11 guard had 21 of those points in the decisive first half when he made 6 of 9 shots, including 4 of 4 treys. Akognon also made 15 of 15 from the free throw line. His free throw percentage set a school single-game record, eclipsing the 14 of 14 effort by Kevin Henderson against Texas Tech on Dec. 5, 1985.
It marked only the third time in CSF's Division I history that a player posted 40-plus points and only the second time that an opponent had gotten 40 or more versus Bakersfield.
Akognon redeemed himself after a 6 of 23 shooting effort in a loss at Montana State Tuesday. He finished with 18 points, three rebounds and an assist.
For the week, Akognon averaged 29.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
Others nominated: Willie Galick (Cal State Northridge); Bryan LeDuc (Pacific)
