UC Irvine's Scott Gorgen and Long Beach State's Brandon Godfrey end the regular season on a high note, picking up the final Easton Big West Pitcher/Player of the Week honors. This is both Gorgen and Godfrey’s second weekly honor of the year.
Gorgen pitched his second consecutive complete-game shutout in Friday’s 5-0 win over No. 16 UC Riverside. Gorgen, who had given up just four hits against Cal State Northridge in his previous start, held the Highlanders to just three hits and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts to improve to 10-2 on the season. The sophomore right-hander did not allow a runner to reach third and struck out the final two batters in the ninth to end the game. After giving up a single in the third, Gorgen did not give up another hit and retired the next 14 batters before issuing a walk in the sixth. The Concord, Calif., native has now pitched 18 consecutive shutout innings and shares the team-lead of 96 strikeouts. He has pitched four complete games this season and has pitched in three of UCI’s seven shutouts.
Godfrey's power at the plate led the Long Beach State 49ers to a series win over conference rival Cal State Fullerton. In the three-game series, the Cypress, Calif., native recorded three multi-game hits and boasted a .571 batting average (8-for-14) with six runs scored and five RBI. Godfrey was the team leader in the final two decisions (W, 10-6; W, 11-8). Saturday he tallied three RBI over the final two innings and in Sunday's contest he knocked-out a RBI single as part of a five-run fifth and later scored in a three-run, deciding seventh inning.
Others nominated were pitchers Jason Haar (Pacific), Matt Montgomery (UC Riverside) and Grant Theophilus (Cal Poly) and infielder Cody Cipriano (UC Irvine), outfielder Joey Gonzales (UC Riverside) and 3B Brent Morel (Cal Poly).
