UC Riverside's Carl Uhl and Cal State Fullerton's Adam Jorgenson led their respective teams to three-game sweeps to kick-off the 2007 season, earning them Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Making his first collegiate starts, sophomore center fielder Carl Uhl reached base in 13 of his 15 plate appearances and collected multiple hits in each of the games to guide the Highlanders to a season-opening three-game sweep over former Big West member Nevada.
In Thursday’s 8-4 win to start the season, Uhl recorded his first three-hit game, going 3-for-4 and driving in two. The Phelan, Calif., native, followed that with another impressive three-hit outing (3-for-3), scoring three times and walking an additional three times. He concluded the weekend with a 1-for-2 effort, along with another walk, hit by pitch and sacrifice bunt. For the week, he fired a .778 batting average, scored four runs and drove in another four.
After a shaky Titan start that allowed nationally-ranked Stanford to pick up five runs in the first three innings, right-hander Adam Jorgensen came in shut down the Cardinal offense, giving Cal State Fullerton the opportunity for a come-from-behind victory over visiting Stanford Saturday night. He allowed just two singles over the final 6 1/3 innings of the game to secure a 6-5 Cal State Fullerton win over Stanford. The Costa Mesa, Calif., native struck out a career-high seven batters, including all three outs in the top of the eighth inning. The junior Titan faced 16 batters and did not allow a Cardinal runner to advance past second base.
