Cal Poly freshman pitcher Helen Peña and Cal State Fullerton junior infielder Jessica Doucette earned the Pitcher and Player of the Week honors after leading their clubs to big wins at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
Fullerton's Doucette Leads Titans in the Desert
Cal State Fullerton infielder Jessica Doucette (El Segundo, Calif./University of Georgia) picked up a hit in each of the Titans' five games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., to lead CSF to a solid showing at the weekend tourney.
The junior leadoff hitter opened the tourney with her first three-hit game of the year, two being doubles, in the extra-inning loss to Portland State. After picking up a hit against Hawai’i, Doucette went 2-for-3 with a RBI and scored three times in the mercy rule win over Seton Hall.
After collecting a hit and walk against Oregon, she wrapped up her tourney with a 2-for-2 effort against Sacramento State. Both of her hits were doubles and she scored three runs.
For the week, Doucette batted .562 (9-16), had four doubles, scored six runs, walked twice and knocked in a pair of runs. She also slugged .813 on the weekend as was on base at a .611 clip.
Cal Poly's Peña Delivers in the Circle Against #6 Northwestern
Cal Poly pitcher Helen Peña (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS) picked up the biggest win of her young college career Sunday as the rookie hurler held down #6 Northwestern in an 8-2 Mustang win.
In just her third career start, the freshman allowed eight hits, struck out a career-high 10 and gave up just two runs, both earned, in the complete-game effort over the sixth-ranked Wildcats.
She had a 2.21 ERA, 12 strikeouts and allowed just four earned runs in 12.2 innings during the tournament. The win over Northwestern was her second win over a ranked opponent this season. She was the winning pitcher in Cal Poly’s 7-6 victory over then #12 Washington February 9.
