Chisa Ononiwu posted season-high marks to help the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos post a 1-1 record for the week, earning her Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week accolades. This marks the first weekly honor of Ononiwu's career.
Ononiwu broke out of her slump last Monday at Loyola Marymount with a then-season-high 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting to lead UC Santa Barbara to its first road victory of the season and first win over the Lions since 2000. The Houston, Texas, native was also 3-for-4 from three-point territory.
The 5-7 guard was even better Friday against third-ranked Maryland, tallying a team-high 20 points on the strength of 4-of-8 shooting from distance. She also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds as the Gauchos nearly pulled off the upset over the undefeated Terrapins. For the week, Ononiwu fired a .522 field goal percentage and averaged 18.5 points per game.
The Gauchos (3-2) embark on a three-game road trip that begins Thursday, Nov. 29 at Santa Clara. Tipoff for the mid-week tilt is slated for 7:00 p.m. UC Santa Barbara follows up its meeting with the Broncos with trips to Portland State and Oregon.
