Pacific senior goalkeeper
Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) did her best imitation of a fortress with her play in net, withstanding an onslaught of opponent shots to earn Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors.
Souza did just about everything for her team except score. For the week, she made an incredible 23 saves over two games, including a career-high 16 stops in a 1-0 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday. She also preserved a 0-0 double overtime tie against UC Santa Barbara after making seven saves in that game.
Her 16 saves against CP tied her for second on the Big West single-game list, putting her in the same company as UC Santa Barbara's Ilsa Bertolini, who stopped 16 shots against California on Sept. 12, 1997. The conference's single-game record for saves stands at 18, set by UC Irvine's Marissa Welliver in 2004.
Despite Pacific's 0-1-1 record for the week, Souza recorded her 21st career shutout on Friday after stopping several legitimate Gaucho scoring chances among their 18 shots. The shot onslaught only got worse for Souza against CP. The Mustangs peppered the Tigers with a Big West single-game season high 35 shots and Souza turned away all 16 that were on frame. However, the 17th shot on goal managed to sneak past her in the second overtime. Souza still posted a .958 save percentage for the week.
