Irvine, CA – Long Beach State claimed its first ever Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup by finishing in the top three in all 13 sports the school competed in during the 2005-06 conference season. The 49ers averaged 126.2 points and won Big West titles in Women’s Tennis and Men’s Track and Field, and were co-champions in Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Basketball. They also came in second place in three other sports and finished in third place in six sports. Long Beach State ends the reign of UC Santa Barbara, who had won the last five Commissioner’s Cups.
The Cup is presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 17 sponsored sports championships during the 2005-2006 season. It is the eighth year the Cup has been awarded.
The 49ers won two of their four championships in the spring sports season. The women’s tennis team won the inaugural regular season title and third straight conference championship title. The men’s track and field squad won its first team title in thirty years.
The other two Long Beach State championships were shared with UC Santa Barbara, who finished second in this year’s Commissioner’s Cup race. The Gauchos, who averaged 107.5 points in the standings, also won team titles in Men’s Swimming, Women’s Swimming and Men’s Tennis.
Cal State Fullerton improved upon its seventh place finish a year ago and placed third in the Commissioner’s Cup standings. It is the highest finish for the Cal State Fullerton program in the history of the Cup. The Titans won titles in Women’s Soccer, Softball and Baseball and placed third in Women’s Basketball and Men’s Track and Field.
To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus. The Commissioner’s Cup is then awarded to the school with the highest average.
