Cal State Northridge's Peek Punishes UC Riverside Pitching
Cal State Northidge freshman Amanda Peek (La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS) has offered many glimpses into the future of the Matador program with her solid play all season, and last week's performance against UC Riverside landed her her first career Big West Player of the Week honor.
Peek, a 5-5 shortstop, posted a .600 (6-for-10) average in CSUN's three-game sweep of the Highlanders and extended her hitting streak to 14 games in the process. Peek had a pair of hits and runs scored in each game, and recorded four RBI. She notched three doubles and a home run to help her to a 1.200 slugging percentage for the weekend.
She went 2-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBI in Northridge's 8-6 victory in game two. It was her 12th homer of the season, which is a CSUN single season record for a freshman and only five shy of the all-time mark. Her three doubles increased her season total to 14 and put her only three away from the CSUN single-season record.
Long Beach State's Turner Continues to Pile Up Wins
Long Beach State junior Michelle Turner (Buena Park, CA/UCLA) added a sixth Big West Pitcher of the Week honor to her impressive list of accomplishments in 2006, accounting for two wins and a save in her team's sweep of Pacific.
The right-hander improved to 22-8 on the year and notched her second save of the season with last weekend's efforts. The 22 wins ties her for fifth on the 49er single-season chart. Turner is eyeing the school record of 25 victories set by Annette Gonzales in 1988.
Turner allowed four runs in 15.2 innings pitched for a 1.79 ERA, walking just one and striking out 14 in three appearances versus the Tigers.
Turner opened the series with a two-hit complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory. She did not walk a batter and struck out nine, at one point fanning seven straight batters. In game two, also a 1-0 victory, Turner came on to pitch in relief and recorded the final five outs for the save. The Tigers put a slight dent in Turner's armor in the series finale, touching her for six hits and four runs, but she pitched well enough for LBSU to gain the 7-4 victory. Turner went the distance for her 25th complete game of the season. She also struck out five in the game.
