A history making no-hitter and a strong performance at the plate earned UC Irvine's Glenn Swanson and Long Beach State's Evan Longoria Big West Pitcher and Player of the Week, for the week ending April 30.
UC Irvine nabs its second consecutive Big West Pitcher of the Week honor after Glenn Swanson tossed the Anteaters' first no-hitter in 32 years in a 7-0 win over San Diego last Tuesday. Using just 89 pitches, the southpaw from San Diego, Calif., yielded one walk, while striking out 14. This was only UCI’s third no-hitter in school history. The last time a no-hitter was thrown by a Big West school was back on March 28, 2003 when Cal Poly’s Garrett Olson and Tony Saipe combined for a 7-0 win over Southern Utah. Pacific Tiger D.J. Houlton posted the last complete game no-hitter on May 11, 2001 with an 8-0 victory over UC Riverside.
Swanson posted his second win of the week in Sunday's matchup with UC Davis, giving the Anteaters a sweep over the Aggies. In 5.2 innings pitched he gave up eight hits and three runs for a 1.84 ERA. He put together 17.2 scoreless innings in three starts before yielding a run in the fifth during the UC Davis showdown.
Evan Longoria's performance at the plate this week, guided Long Beach State to a 4-0 week, extending the 49er win streak to seven. He recorded a batting average of .583 and a slugging percentage of 1.00. In 12 at bats he combined for six runs and six RBI, which included a solo home run and a key bunt in Saturday’s eighth inning that drove in a run to extend the 49ers' lead over the Tigers. In Sunday's game the third baseman's two-run double erased a first inning lead by Pacific, which later resulted in a sweep over the Tigers. This is Longoria's third appearance of the season on Big West’s weekly honor list.
