Vieyra A Big Hit For Cal State Fullerton Offense
Cal State Fullerton sophomore infielder Crystal Vieyra (Stanton, CA/Pacifica HS) engaged in a sort of hit parade for the Titans, both in terms of hitting the ball and getting hit by the ball. Her ability to get on base from the top of the order helped the Titans to a 3-2 week and earned her Big West Softball Player of the Week honors.
Vieyra went 5-for-10 (.500) at the plate at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., posting at least one hit in four of the five games. In addition, she got plunked by a pitch an incredible seven times to boost her on base percentage for the week to an astounding .722. Vieyra has been hit by a pitch eight times total this season and 25 times for her career, which is only four shy of second place on the school's all-time list in just her second season.
She went 2-for-2 while being hit by a pitch twice in a loss to Brigham Young, and got hit twice more against both Northwestern and Notre Dame. Vieyra had one hit in wins over Utah State and Notre Dame.
Long Beach State's Turner Blanks No. 2 UCLA
Long Beach State junior Michelle Turner (Buena Park, CA/UCLA) went 2-0 for the week, including shutting down the nation's second-ranked team to earn Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Turner, a transfer from UCLA, posted a five-hit shutout against her former team on Wednesday. She walked none and struck out six as the 49ers beat the Bruins 1-0. In a rain-shortened Commercial Capital Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara, Turner collected her second win of the week with a complete game effort against Tulsa. The right-hander allowed eight hits and two runs while fanning seven in a 6-2 victory.
For the week, Turner had 13 strikeouts and no walks in 14.0 innings of work while amassing a 1.00 earned run average.
