UC Irvine’s Scott Gorgen threw a shutout in 8.1 innings pitched against Hawaii, while Cal State Fullerton's Brett Pill batted .636 during a three-game series against UNLV, earning them Big West Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, for the week ending Feb. 12.

Gorgen (Concord, Calif.), who started Saturday's game between UC Irvine and Hawaii, threw a shutout in the 8.1 innings pitched. The Anteaters would go on to claim a 1-0 victory over the Warriors. Saturday’s contest was the only win UCI recorded on its trip to the Big Island. The freshman right-hander struck out six and after giving up two singles in the top of the third, he retired the next 17 consecutive batters before issuing his second walk. This is the second time Grogran’s pitching performance has led to a series tie for UCI and he has now hurled 14 innings pitched without giving up an earned run. Gorgen (0.00) is 2-0 in two starts and has struck out nine batters and allowed just two walks.

Pill hit .636 (7-for-11) in three games at first base for the Cal State Fullerton Titans. The Covina, Calif., native went 4-for-5 in Friday night’s contest with the UNLV Rebels, then followed it up with a 2-for-4 performance on Saturday. He hit his first home run of the year and chased it with a double, driving in three along the way. The junior also drew three walks, hit a SAC fly, stole a base and scored three runs over the weekend, as the Titans went on to sweep UNLV at home. Game scores were 9-1, 13-4 and 3-1.
