Cal State Northridge senior Davin White (Phoenix, AZ/Chandler-Gilbert CC) rained three-pointers on the opposition and broke out of a shooting slump in a big way, grabbing Big West Player of the Week honors after helping the Matadors to road wins over UC Irvine and Long Beach State.
White averaged 21.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting a blistering 57.7 (15-for-26) percent from the floor and 63.6 (7-for-11) percent from the three-point line. The performances helped blot out an early season shooting slump which saw the 6-1 guard make just 36.0 percent from the field and 29.5 percent on three-pointers through the first 11 games.
However, it was White’s shooting prowess off the bench that allowed the Matadors to end a six-game road losing streak and post a pair of wins by double-digit margins. In a 66-52 win over the Anteaters, White recorded 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. He made 5-of-11 floor shots, including 2-of-4 on three-pointers. His two threes occurred during a 27-6 second half run that aided CSUN in erasing an 11-point halftime deficit.
In a 69-53 victory versus the 49ers, White erupted for a career-high 28 points in just 26 minutes of action. He knocked down 10-of-15 field goal attempts and canned five three-pointers, sinking all three of his free throw tries. White scored seven straight points at one juncture to to give CSUN a 62-46 lead with 5:15 left in the game. He chipped in with two rebounds, two assists and two steals against LBSU.
