Heritage Calendar

Inclusion is a core value of the NCAA, and they believe in and are committed to diversity, inclusion and gender equity among student-athletes, coaches and administrators. The five core areas of DEI focused on by the NCAA are: disability, international, LGBTQ, race/ethnicity and women which is why The Big West has selected the below Heritage Months and holidays to highlight.

If there is a holiday you wish to see reflected on this calendar, please reach out to Assistant Commissioner of Student-Athlete Programming, Leslie Chang at lchang@bigwest.org.

  • Pride Month - Dedicated to the celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) pride. Pride Month is currently celebrated in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, which is considered the tipping point of the Gay Liberation movement in the US.
  • June 19 - Juneteenth - The annual celebration of the end of slavery. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on Jan 1, 1893, and the Civil War ended on April 9, 1965, there remained over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas until Union troops arrived on June 19, 1865 to order their emancipation.
