Hornets Marthaler and Gartin Joined by LBSU's Maxwell and Neal of CBU for Big West Women's Volleyball Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week 
Victoria Marthaler, Sacramento State | Junior • Outside Hitter • Alburquerque, N.M.
  • After leading Sacramento State to a perfect weekend at their home tournament, junior Victoria Marthaler has been named Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the first time. It is the first career weekly honor from the league for the reigning Big Sky Player of the Year 

  • Marthaler was named co-MVP of the Sacramento State Invitational after combining for 60 kills in victories over Nevada, Texas Tech and Saint Mary’s, averaging 4.62 kills, 5.23 points and 1.54 digs per set. 

  • The junior from Alburquerque, N.M., with 22 kills and seven digs as the Hornets took down Nevada in five sets on Friday. 

  • Then, the six-rotation outside hitter put down 18 kills with a pair of service aces in a sweep over Texas Tech of the Big 12 in Saturday’s sweep 

  • Finally, Marthaler narrowly missed the double-double against the Gaels finishing with 20 kills on .318 hitting with nine digs and four blocks to finish out the weekend in Sunday’s five-setter. 

  • Through the first two weeks of the season, Marthaler is currently in the Top 10 in Division I in total kills (108 – 9th) and points (124 – 8th).

Defensive Player of the Week 
Skyler Gartin, Sacramento State | Junior • Middle Blocker • Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • 8388After a benchmark weekend at the net for Sacramento State, junior Skyler Gartin has been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 7. This is a first career weekly honor for Gartin.  

  • The middle blocker from Scottsdale, Ariz., also picked up All-Tournament honors at the Sacramento State Invitational after averaging 1.38 blocks and 1.69 kills per set in a three-win weekend on the home court. 

  • Gartin’s highlight match of the Invitational came in Sunday’s finale, posting a career-high 13 blocks in a five-set victory over Saint Mary’s. The baker’s dozen ties for the third-best mark in the Hornets’ Division I program history.  

  • Gartin’s play at the net was a huge part of a Sacramento State defense that limited its opponents to a combined .181 hitting percentage, also claiming wins against Nevada in five and a sweep over Texas Tech.

Setter of the Week 
Madi Maxwell, Long Beach State | Junior • Setter • Newhall, Calif.
  • 8042Junior Madi Maxwell filled up the stat sheet in a 3-0 weekend at the Utah Classic to scoop up Big West Setter of the Week for Sept. 7. The weekly honor is a fourth career weekly setter award, and the first of the 2026 season. 

  • In the weekend opener, Maxwell guided the team to .402 hitting in a sweep of Eastern Illinois with 35 assists and nine digs.  

  • In Saturday’s five-set win over the host Utes, who were receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, the Newhall, Calif. native, recorded a second triple-double of the season, finishing with 10 kills, with 36 assists and 13 digs while leading the team with seven blocks in a power conference win.  

  • Sunday morning, Maxwell again led the team in digs with 15 and assists with 28 while hitting .286 with eight kills and four blocks.  

  • All told, Maxwell averaged 1.62 kills, 2.85 digs and 7.62 assists per set with 12 total blocks and a pair of service aces as the Beach hit a combined .243 as a team.

Rookie of the Week 
Nalanie Neal, California Baptist | Freshman • Outside Hitter • Wytheville, Va.
  • 8083For the second straight week, California Baptist true freshman Nalanie Neal led the Lancer offense to secure Big West Rookie of the Week honors for Sept. 7.  

  • The first-year player from Wytheville, Va., recorded 3.83 kills and 2.25 digs per set to go along with seven total blocks and three service aces at the ASICS Invitational hosted by Oregon State. Impressively, five stuffs at the net were of the solo variety. 

  • The outside hitter’s week was highlighted by a monster double-double in a five-set loss to Montana with career highs in both kills (24) and digs (12) while also recording three solo blocks against the Grizzlies on Sunday. 

  • In Saturday’s victorious effort against SeattleU, Neal posted 15 kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks in the four-setter.  

  • Averaging 4.61 points per set through two weeks on the court, Neal leads The Big West in the category thus far in the season.
