Offensive Player of the Week  Miley Thunstrom, Utah Valley | Sophomore • Outside Hitter • Murrietta, Calif.

• Leading Utah Valley to a pair of victories to open up Big West play, Miley Thunstrom has been named Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 28. 

• Thunstrom recorded a career-high 17 kills (5.67 per set) in Thursday night’s home sweep of UC Riverside  

• The sophomore outside hitter matched the mark in a five-setter against California Baptist, which also included three service aces, five total blocks and eight digs. 

• The Murietta, Calif., native averaged 4.25 kills on .325 hitting, 1.50 digs and 5.19 points per set over the weekend en route to a first career Big West weekly award.

Defensive Player of the Week  Madi Maxwell, Long Beach State | Junior • Setter • Newhall, Calif.

• After helping Long Beach State extend their streak to 10 wins, Madi Maxwell’s all-around play has been rewarded with Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors for Sept. 28. An eighth career weekly award, this marks Maxwell’s first defensive nod.  

• Maxwell led the Beach in both blocks and digs over road wins, finishing the weekend with 13 total blocks and 28 digs in seven sets.  

• In Friday’s sweep at Black-Blue rival UC Irvine, the junior from Newhall, Calif., finished with 20 assists, 11 digs and four blocks along with four kills and and no errors on nine attempts to hit .444. 

• Saturday at UC San Diego, the setter assisted on 26 plays with 17 digs and eight blocks in the four-set victory against the Tritons, narrowly missing an assists-digs-blocks triple-double.

Setter of the Week  Makenna Wiepert, Sacramento State | Junior • Setter • Sherwood, Ore.

• Directing Sacramento State to a pair of wins to open league play, Makenna Wiepert has earned Big West Setter of the Week for Sept. 28, claiming back-to-back awards. 

• The junior setter averaged 11.50 assists and 2.50 digs per set, with four aces and four digs in a pair of home sweeps as the Hornets hit a combined .407 on the weekend.  

• In Thursday’s battle against California Baptist as both teams opened up The Big West era, Wiepert finished with 31 assists, five digs, four blocks and four kills on .571 hitting (4-0-7). Three of Wiepert’s four aces on the week also came against the Lancers. 

• The product of Sherwood, Ore., contributed a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs in Saturday’s three-setter against UC Riverside.  

• Wiepert bumped the season average to 8.96 assists per set, good for second in The Big West.

Rookie of the Week  Nikola Gamlin, Sacramento State | Freshman • Middle Blocker • Airdrie, Alberta, Canada

• Nikola Gamlin claimed Big West Rookie of the Week for Sept. 28 after helping the Hornets to a sweeping start to conference play. 

• The freshman from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, hit a whopping .632 in six sets on the court with 12 kills on 19 errorless attacks to average 2.40 kills per set.  

• In Thursday’s win against California Baptist, Gamlin posted six kills on .600 hitting with three blocks. 

• Saturday, the middle blocker again contributed six kills while hitting .667 while adding an ace and an assist against UC Riverside.  

• Gamlin currently leads The Big West in hitting percentage at .409, which rates 31st in NCAA Division I.
