Currently all six Big West teams are ranked in the Top 20 with defending conference champion Hawai`i at No. 2, defending national champion Long Beach State right behind at No. 3 and No. 5 UC Irvine making a strong case for entry into the expanded 12-team field for the 2026 National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship. No. 8 UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego and CSUN at No. 13 and 18, respectively, also will prove a formidable foe in the championship’s winner-take-all format.

The Rainbow Warriors enter the field as defending Big West Champions and winners of four of the seven postseason conference events since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2018. Last year’s national champion and Big West regular-season victor Long Beach State looks for a third overall Big West postseason crown after taking home the spoils in 2024 and the inaugural 2018 event, while their eye is on a second set of back-to-back national titles (2018, ’19, ’25).

Seven of the last eight AVCA Players of the Year hail from the conference, including the last five, and the candidate pool for 2026 has some intriguing names from The Big West. UH junior and 14-time conference Setter of the Week Tread Rosenthal recently surpassed 3,000 career assists to pace the country and directs one of the most efficient offenses that produces a nation’s best 13.78 kills per set while hitting .385 as a team.

The Big West’s leading kills and points-getter Jalen Phillips of CSUN earned distinction on the AVCA’s midseason Player of the Year watch list as did the league’s most prolific serving tandem, Skyler Varga and Alex Kandev, who team up to help LBSU lead national collegiate volleyball from the service line. Championship hosts UCI boast the offensive services of freshman Andrej Jokanovic and league leader in hitting percentage and blocking Trevor Clark.

With these six and a bevy more tremendously talented student-athletes taking a swing at the title in the powerhouse Big West, the action from Court 21 will be must-watch men’s volleyball. For fans unable to secure their seats at the Bren, all five matches in the championship will be produced by Spectrum Sports and broadcast live on ESPN+ for mainland viewers and Spectrum Sports in Hawai‘i.
