Isabella Alonso and Maalia Cherry Capture First Weekly Awards With New Squads, Nina Sepulveda Collects First of Career

Field Player of the Week 
Maalia Cherry, UC San Diego | Sophomore • Infielder • Hayward, Calif.  
  • 8138•UC San Diego infielder Maalia Cherry hit .750 (9-for-12) with a double and a pair of home runs to earn The Big West Field Player of the Week award after leading the Tritons to a 6-0 showing at the USD/UCSD Co-Host Tournament. This is the fifth weekly award of the sophomore’s career, but first in a Triton uniform after claiming both Field Player and Freshman on Feb. 2, Feb. 17, and March 24, 2025. 

  • Cherry posted a 1.333 slugging percentage and .778 on-base percentage, drawing four walks without a strikeout on the week.

  • The new Triton recorded multiple hits in five of six games as UC San Diego extended its win streak to seven games.

  • At 10-1 overall, the Tritons are off to their best start in the Division I era.

  • 32247Long Beach State senior pitcher Isabella Alonso went 3-0 with a 0.95 WHIP over 12.2 innings to collect The Big West Pitcher of the Week award following a standout performance at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. This is the second weekly distinction of the senior’s career after logging pitcher of the week for CSUN on March 20, 2025.

  • Alonso made three appearances in the circle to claim All-Tournament Team recognition after guiding Long Beach State to multiple key victories in Mexico.

Freshman of the Week 
Nina Sepulveda, Long Beach State | • Infielder • Palmdale, Calif.
  • 32247Long Beach State freshman infielder Nina Sepulveda batted .385 with 11 RBI to secure The Big West Freshman of the Week award after earning MVP honors at the Puerto Vallarta College Classic. This is the first weekly award of Sepulveda’s career.

  • Sepulveda powered Long Beach State to a 4-1 record in Mexico, delivering a grand slam and a two-run single in the finale against Eastern Kentucky.

  • The freshman tallied six RBI in the championship game, capping a breakout collegiate weekend.
