As the 2025 Big West women’s volleyball season nears, we look ahead to a stout non-conference and always competitive Big West slate featuring an 18-match league ledger and the culmination of the season at The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2025 Outrigger Big West Women’s Volleyball Championship on Nov. 26, 28 & 29, from Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.
The 2025 NCAA Division I women’s volleyball season commences on Friday, Aug. 29, with the first of four non-conference weeks as that segment of competition once again takes place largely through tournaments around the country. League teams UC San Diego, CSUN, Long Beach State and Hawai’i open the year at home, with the Beach hosting Stanford ranked No. 6 in the AVCA/TERAFLEX Division I Preseason Poll. Also out of the gate against ranked foes, the defending champion Rainbow Wahine and vote-getter of their own take on a pair of foes also receiving votes in Marquette and San Diego. The Big West schedule gets underway on Tuesday night, Sept. 23, with UC Davis visiting UC Riverside for a 6 p.m. PT first serve inside the Johnson Family Practice Center, and concludes with five tilts on Saturday, Nov. 22, wrapping up nine full weeks of Big West play.

The first rematch of the 2024 Big West Championship match comes in Week 3 of the conference schedule as Hawai’i welcomes Cal Poly to O’ahu on Friday, Oct. 10. The return trip to San Luis Obispo is in the penultimate week of the season on Saturday, Nov. 15. UH won all three meetings against the Mustangs in 2024.

Aside from Hawai’i, Cal Poly only dropped conference matches to two other foes en route to the regular-season title: UC Davis and UC San Diego. The Mustangs travel to UCSD in the second week of the season on Oct. 3 with the return game slated for Nov. 8. Cal Poly takes on Northern California foe UC Davis just one, hosting the Aggies on Oct. 25 in their final conference meeting before changes in membership begin for the 2026 campaign.

Welcome to The Big West! Three new head coaches to the league will be patrolling The Big West sidelines. Brandon Higa was announced as the leader of the Highlanders program on April 24, coming to UC Riverside from crosstown rival and future Big West opponent California Baptist. A rebuilding Cal State Bakersfield side will feature co-interim head coaches in Felipe Nogueira and Cinthia Angus, both members of the Roadrunners’ 2024 staff. A new, but familiar, face will also be on the sidelines for Cal State Fullerton as program alumna and former assistant coach Nicky Cannon returns to the Titans, announced Feb. 4.

The upcoming Big West women’s volleyball season continues with the unbalanced schedule of 18 matches to accommodate The Big West Championship. This fall, all 11 matchups in Week 5 between Tuesday-Saturday, Oct. 21-24, will mark the lone meetings of the season between those squads. Each team sees one home and one road game on the docket.

Can Hawai’i do it again? Ninth-year head coach Robyn Ah Mow’s Rainbow Wahine have won The Big West crown in each of the past five seasons, including taking both Championship titles in 2023 and 2024. The Rainbow Wahine took down No. 1 seed Cal Poly in the finale to advance to their 31st consecutive NCAA Championship, and 42nd all time. In rarefied air on the national stage, UH is one of five teams to dot the field on more than 40 occasions, alongside Texas (41), Stanford (43), Nebraska (43), and Penn State (44). This will mark UH’s final season in The Big West as full members.
The 2025 Big West Women’s Volleyball Championship opens on Wednesday, Nov. 26, with the No. 3 seed taking on the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed facing the No. 5 seed. The top two seeds join the fray in the semifinals two nights later against the advancing teams with the championship match set for Saturday, Nov. 29. All five matches showcasing the play of the best of the Big West will be broadcast on ESPN+.
