UCSD Duo Cherfan and Dvorak Joined by LBSU Pair Larson and Nikolov for Big West Men's Volleyball Weekly Honors

Offensive Player of the Week
Anthony Cherfan, UC San Diego | Senior • Opposite Hitter • Los Angeles
  • After a big weekend split over UC Irvine, UC San Diego senior Anthony Cherfan has been selected as Big West Offensive Player of the Week for April 7. This is a second career offensive award (April 15, 2024) and third overall, after claiming defensive honors on Jan. 6. 

  • Over two Big West matches and seven sets, the opposite hitter led the Tritons with 32 kills (4.57 per set) while hitting .385 to go along with nine digs (1.29 per set), four blocks and an ace.  

  • In Friday’s 3-1 home win vs. #4 UC Irvine, Cherfan led all players with 20 kills while hitting .386. The Los Angeles native also collected six digs and three blocks in the first victory against the Anteaters since 2022. 

  • In Friday’s loss at UCI, Cherfan led all Tritons with 12 kills while hitting .381 and contributing three digs, a block and an ace.  

  • Cherfan currently rates fourth in The Big West and 21st nationally in both kills (3.63) and points (4.39) per set.

Defensive Player of the Week
Kellen Larson, Long Beach State | Freshman • Libero • Irvine, Calif.
  • Freshman Kellen Larson anchored the Long Beach State defense to a pair of wins against UC Santa Barbara to nab Big West Defensive Player of the Week. 

  • Larson and the Beach limited USCB to a collective .124 hitting percentage with Larson averaging 2.43 digs per set.  

  • In Thursday’s four-set victory, the libero from Irvine, Calif., logged a career-high eight digs with a pair of assists on the road.  

  • Friday, Larson came back with a new career mark of nine digs with a kill in the three-set sweep at Walter Pyramid.

Setter of the Week
Bryce Dvorak, UC San Diego | Graduate Student • Setter • Newport Beach, Calif.
  • 8138UC San Diego’s Bryce Dvorak earned Big West Setter of the Week after piloting the Tritons to a series split against UC Irvine.  

  • Dvorak bumped the season average to 10.37 assists per set, good for second in The Big West and sixth in national collegiate volleyball. 

  • In Saturday’s road rematch, Dvorak dished out 34 assists as the team hit .373 in the three-set loss. 

  • In Friday’s four-set home victory, the graduate student from Newport Beach, Calif., racked up 60 assists while adding seven digs, with two aces, and a block 

  • Dvorak totaled 94 assists (13.43 per set) and paced UCSD to a .395 attack percentage in seven sets of action.

Freshman of the Week
Moni Nikolov, Long Beach State | Freshman • Setter • Sofia, Bulgaria
  • 8042Freshman setter Moni Nikolov helped lead Long Beach State to a pair of wins against UC Santa Barbara en route to a sixth career Big West Freshman of the Week honor. Nikolov has also won weekly setter honors on three occasions this year, bringing the total tally to nine awards. 

  • Nikolov led the Beach to a .385 attack percentage while averaging 10.00 assists per set to go along with 1.43 digs, 1.29 kills, 0.43 blocks, and 0.43 aces per set.  

  • In Thursday’s four-set road win, LBSU hit .412 with Nikolov dishing out 43 assists ran a balanced offense on the road at UCSB as the Beach hit .412, while he dished out 43 assists. An all around player, Nikolov also chipped in five kills on a .333 clip (5-1-12), five digs, two blocks, and two aces.  

  • In LBSU's home match against the Gauchos, the native of Sofia, Bulgaria, distributed 27 assists to go along with five digs, four kills, one block and an ace. 

  • Nikolov leads the country in aces per set (1.051) and rates fifth in the conference in assists per set (9.71).
