UCI's Henno Joins Varga and Nikolov of LBSU as The Big West Men's Volleyball Weekly Honorees

Offensive Player of the Week
Hilir Henno, UC Irvine | Senior • Opposite Hitter • Pornichet, France
  • 8136After two sweeping wins on the Atlantic seaboard, UC Irvine’s Hilir Henno has been named Big West Offensive Player of the Week for March 24. This is the fourth weekly honor of the season, and an 11th career nod as the offensive winner. 

  • The senior outside hitter averaged 4.33 kills, 6.33 points, 1.67 aces and 1.83 digs in a pair of 3-0 matches at Daemen and George Mason.  

  • In Friday’s match against Daemen, Henno finished with 12 kills while hitting .733 (12-1-15) along with four aces, four digs and three total blocks.  

  • In Saturday’s  contest against George Mason, the product of Pornichet, France led all players with 14 kills, hitting .409 and firing a season-best six aces with a match-high seven digs.  

  • After the weekend, Henno is up to second in the nation in points average (5.36), fourth in kills (4.30) and second in aces (0.770). With 228 career aces, Henno is 19 strikes away from the national collegiate record of 247 held by Javier Placer of Springfield (1993-96).

Defensive Player of the Week
Skyler Varga, Long Beach State | Junior • Opposite Hitter • Muenster, Saskatchewan
  • Long Beach State’s Skyler Varga claimed back-to-back weekly honors, earning Big West Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Beach to a pair of wins against NJIT. Last week, Varga was tabbed for the offensive award for a first career distinction. 

  • Varga averaged 2.00 blocks, 1.86 digs and 4.21 points per set for the 20-0 and top-ranked LBSU team. 

  • In the first meeting against NJIT, the junior from Muenster, Saskatchewan tied for the LBSU team lead in both blocks and digs, finishing with eight apiece in Friday’s four-set victory. 

  • Saturday, the opposite hitter produced six blocks and five digs along with 10 kills on .381 hitting in a sweep of the Highlanders 

  • Varga was a vital piece of the team’s defensive effort that saw NJIT hit under .075 in both matches.

Setter of the Week
Moni Nikolov, Long Beach State | Freshman • Setter • Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Long Beach State freshman Moni Nikolov picked up consecutive Big West Setter of the Week awards, to total three on the season.  

  • Nikolov commanded all aspects of the floor during two wins over NJIT, finishing with 63 total assists while guiding Long Beach State to .380 combined hitting for the week. Nikolov also made valuable offensive contributions, hitting .619 while averaging 2.14 kills per set along with 1.57 blocks and 1.43 aces per set. 

  • The native of Sofia, Bulgaria, finished with 35 assists alongside seven kills, seven blocks and five aces in Friday’s four-set win.  

  • In Saturday’s sweep, Nikolov helped on 28 scoring plays while adding eight kills, five aces and four blocks to the stat sheet. 

  • Nikolov leads the country in aces per set at 1.154, the lone student-athlete in national collegiate volleyball eclipsing 1.000.

Freshman of the Week

  • Helping Long Beach State stay perfect on the season, setter Moni Nikolov picked up consecutive Big West Freshman of the Week awards to total five on the year and a combined eight weekly honors including setter awards.  

  • Nikolov commanded all aspects of the floor during two wins over NJIT, finishing with 63 total assists while guiding Long Beach State to .380 combined hitting for the week. Nikolov also made valuable offensive contributions, hitting .619 while averaging 2.14 kills per set along with 1.57 blocks and 1.43 aces per set.
