Top Tandem Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah for No. 9 Long Beach State Earn Big West Pairs Team of the Week Honors

Malia Gementera (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.) and Taylor Hagenah (Jr., Oceanside, Calif.) | Long Beach State

  • 8042After a four-win week for Long Beach State, junior pairing Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah earned Big West Pairs Team of the Week for March 18. This is a second award of the season (Feb. 25), and fifth career honor for the duo. 

  • Playing from the No. 1 position, Gementera and Hagenah helped LBSU take four home matches, winning a pair at the LBCC Sand Courts at two more from Rosie’s Dog Beach.  

  • The team swept through matches against Tarleton State and Concordia with Gementera and Hagenah dominating two-set wins. 

  • The final team score against Arizona State and Boice State was 4-1, with the junior tandem also needing just two sets to take down their foes. Every set was decided in 16 points or less with just one set against Boise State hitting that mark. Meanwhile, Gementera and Hagenah’s opponents scored a dozen or less points in six frames. 

  • Gementera and Hagenah are in the midst of an 8-0 winning streak and have not dropped a set in two weeks. The duo was the dual clinching point for both matches on the 15th and the first point in both duals on the 16th.
