On Saturday, Varga was the LBSU team leader in kills, aces, and digs against No. 19 Princeton, finishing with 11 kills on .476 hitting with four aces and five digs. The opposite hitter from Muenster, Saskatchewan was also in on three blocks against the Tigers, finishing with 16.5 points.

All told, Varga hit .516 in total on the week, averaging 2.83 kills, 4.67 points, 1.33 aces and 1.33 digs per set as the Beach improved to 18-0 (2-0 BW) on the season.

The senior from Corona Del Mar, Calif., averaged 1.67 blocks per set, leading the Beach netminders that finished with 19 total team blocks against No. 7 CSUN and No. 19 Pepperdine.

After another sweeping set of victories with Moni Nikolov directing the Long Beach State offense, the freshman has earned Big West Setter of the Week for the second time this season. The first nod came on Feb. 17, which was also coupled with freshman honors.

On Friday, the product of Sofia, Bulgaria, was in on four blocks and served up seven strikes against CSUN. With a tally of 65 aces and counting, Nikolov is now the Long Beach State single-season aces record holder with more than a month remaining of the season.

In Saturday’s win against the Tigers, Nikolov added four kills, two blocks and three aces to the stat sheet, alongside the 30-assist effort. Starting every match at setter, Nikolov and the Beach are now 18-0 on the year.

Long Beach State’s Moni Nikolov has claimed Big West Freshman of the Week honors after directing the Long Beach State offense to a pair of sweeping victories over ranked foes. This is the setter’s fourth freshman award of the season (Jan. 20, Feb. 10 and 17).

Nikolov leads the country in ace average at 1.121, far and away ahead of second-place Hilir Henno of UC Irvine at 0.673. Nikolov’s 9.60 assists per set season average rates fifth in the league and 20th nationally.
