In their first-ever NCAA Division I postseason appearance, the No. 4 seed UC San Diego Tritons topped the third-seeded UC Davis Aggies, 75-66, in front of a blue and gold crowd at the 2025 Big West Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Credit Union 1 at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nev.
With this championship win, the Tritons improve to 20-15 on the year, and earn the league's automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Selection Sunday's festivities will air on ESPN at 5 p.m. PT on March 16.
In their first year of postseason eligibility after a four-year reclassification period from NCAA Division II, UC San Diego's name will grace the Division I brackets for the first time. A successful program during their CCAA membership, the Tritons won three CCAA tournaments and eight regular-season crowns.
The win came in wire-to-wire fashion, with the Tritons scoring 34 points in the paint and 19 from the line, including a 12-of-14 effort for All-Tournament team member
Gracie Gallegos.
After a game-winning performance on Friday, Most Valuable Player and San Diego native
Sumayah Sugapong scored 11 points with seven rebounds against the Aggies. Sophomore
Erin Condron also made an impact, with 10 points and six rebounds, with
Sabrina Ma adding 15. Gallegos paced the scoring with 24 points on 50 percent shooting and seven rebounds.
UCSD opened the first quarter with a strong defensive effort, keeping UC Davis scoreless for over six minutes while scoring the first eight points of the contest. Gallegos initiated the scoring for UCSD with a layup at 7:26 and combined for 12 first-frame points along with fellow sophomore Sugapong. UC Davis broke their scoring drought with a three-pointer by
Megan Norris at 4:01, but UCSD closed the quarter with a 16-9 lead.
In the second, UCSD outscored was able to stretch the lead.
Parker Montgomery's triple with 2:08 remaining in the half capped a seven-point run as the Tritons doubled up the Aggies on the scoreboard, 32-16.
UC Davis kept pace with the Tritons in the third and fourth quarters but were unable to cut into the deficit until late in the game. UCSD was able to pull out the 11-point win and keep dancing through March.

Ryann Bennett and senior
Tova Sabel led the Aggies in the loss, each contributing 13 points. Norris added seven points, a team-best seven rebounds and a game-high four assists, as Norris and Sabel were recognized with All-Tournament team honors for their efforts on the week.
The Aggies cap the week with an overall record of 21-12 after a second consecutive Big West Championship runner-up season.
