UC San Diego Gets 'Tough Like Tammy'

UC San Diego team ambassador Sabrina Ma reflects on the ways she has been personally touched by cancer, both within family and through friends and teammates, and embraces the role as a leader to raise awareness and gain support throughout the San Diego community as the team and conference raises funds for the Tough Like Tammy campaign.

A year ago, the joint venture between Big West women's basketball, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Big West women's basketball analyst Tammy Blackburn more than doubled its goal of raising $5,000. The goal in 2024-25 is to raise $15,000 through donations or pledges for each offensive rebound secured during the final month of the Big West women's basketball season. This year, each Big West program selected team ambassadors to spearhead the effort to exceed the team goal of $1,000 per institution.

Throughout the month of February, fans are encouraged to make a donation for each offensive rebound made, or by making a one-time donation to a Big West team at any time throughout the season in The Big West's efforts to reach the $15,000 goal.

Ma, a junior guard from San Francisco, is one of three UCSD players to average double figure scoring on the season. Ma contributes 10.0 points per game on .362 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with  3.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals and1.3 assists per game. In their first year of full postseason eligibility, UC San Diego has already secured their berth to the 2025 Hercules Tires Big West Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Credit Union 1. The Tritons' home Play 4 Kay game is scheduled for this week, on Thursday, Feb. 27, where Ma and the Tritons will be able to show their support and encouragement by bringing awareness and raising money to the cause.

All proceeds from Tough Like Tammy will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Since the fund's inception, more than $8.78 million has been awarded for scientific research and related programs focused on women's cancers and helping the underserved. Thus far this season after a successful I (Heart) Tammy Day on Feb. 14 and a surge in donations this month, Tough Like Tammy has raised $9,285, nearly two-thirds of the way to the goal.
