Sumayah Sugapong of UC San Diego Claims Season's Fourth Big West Player of the Week Award

  • 8138UC San Diego’s Sumayah Sugapong nearly averaged a double-double to lead the Tritons to a 2-0 week while securing Big West Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, a fifth career nod.  

  • Sugapong averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds along with 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game as UCSD defeated Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis to move into third in The Big West standings. 

  • On Thursday, Sugapong scored a team-best 12 points with nine rebounds, four steals, four assists and a block in 30 minutes on the court against the Roadrunners. 

  • The sophomore from San Diego, Calif., recorded a first career double-double in a 65-63 road victory against the Aggies on Saturday. The reigning Big West Freshman of the Year finished with a team-high 23 points with an 8-of-10 effort from the free throw line and a career-best 10 rebounds. This was Sugapong’s seventh 20-point performance of the season.  

  • Sugapong tops the league in assists (3.8) and steals (2.54) and is fifth in scoring at 14.38 points per game. In their first year of postseason eligibility after the transition to Division I, the Tritons are aiming to clinch a spot in the field of the 2025 Hercules Tires Big West Basketball Championships, presented by Credit Union I this week.
