Four First-Time Winners Claim Season Opening Big West Women’s Volleyball Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week 
Amaris Smith, CSUN | Junior • Outside Hitter • Castle Rock, Colo.
  • 8012After being named to the Idaho State All-Tournament Team, CSUN’s Amaris Smith picked up Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors for Sept. 2. 

  • The outside hitter averaged 5.29 kills per set over 14 sets to go along with 22 digs (1.57 per set) and six blocks (0.43 per set) to open the season.  

  • All told, Smith racked up 74 kills, including 29 in CSUN's 3-2 win over San Diego State, the most by a Matador hitter since 2015.  

  • The junior from Castle Rock, Colo., accounted for over 38 percent of CSUN’s kill tally as the team went 1-2 to open up the Aquiles Montoya era.  

  • After the first week of play, Smith’s kill average is leading The Big West.

Defensive Player of the Week 
Paulina Baillie, UC San Diego | Freshman • Libero • Carlsbad, Calif.
  • 8138UC San Diego’s Paulina Baillie was outstanding in a first career weekend of collegiate volleyball to claim Big West Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 2.  

  • Starting all three of the Tritons’ matches at the libero position, Baillie averaged 475 digs per set at the UC San Diego Invitational to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  

  • The Carlsbad, Calif., native collected 57 total digs and one ace as UC San Diego went 3-0 in competition.  

  • Baillie scooped up 20 digs in the three-set win over Northern Arizona in Friday’s season and collegiate debut to help UC San Diego earn a three-set win over Northern Arizona on Friday.  

  • After the first week of play, Baillie’s digs average is leading The Big West.

Setter of the Week 
Katie Kolar, CSUN | Sophomore • Setter • Edmond, Okla.
  • CSUN sophomore Katie Kolar claimed a first career Big West Setter of the Week honor after an impressive start to the season at the Idaho State Tournament.  

  • After the first week of play, Kolar’s assist average is leading The Big West. 

  • Playing well-rounded volleyball, Kolar also added nine kills, seven blocks and four aces for the Matadors. 

  • Kolar notched at least 50 assists in all three matches, averaging 10.93 per set, coupled with 13 or more digs to average 3.07 per set.  

  • The native of Edmond, Okla., piled up three consecutive double-double efforts, handing out 153 assists in three matches while scooping up 43 digs. The trio of double-doubles are the first career marks after transferring in from West Virginia.

Freshman of the Week 
Molly McCluskey, UC San Diego | Freshman • Opposite Hitter • Costa Mesa, Calif.
  • UC San Diego’s Molly McCluskey made an immediate impact for the Tritons to take home the season’s first Big West Freshman of the Week award.  

  • The product of Costa Mesa, Calif. also added 21 digs (1.75 per set) while playing all six rotations for UCSD.  

  • McCluskey played every set for the Tritons, collecting a team-high 41 kills with nine blocks and three aces to total 49.5 points. McCluskey reached the double-digit kill mark in each match, including 14-kill efforts against Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.  

  • The opposite hitter averaged 3.42 kills and 4.13 points per set to lead the Tritons to a 3-0 weekend and earn tournament MVP at the UC San Diego Invitational.
