HONOLULU - Featuring 14 of the nation's top performers, the All-Big West Men's Volleyball Team has been announced on the eve of The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2024 Outrigger Big West Men's Volleyball Championship.
The team includes eight repeat selections to an All-Big West squad and represents all six programs. Big West regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Long Beach State and second-seeded UC Irvine lead the way with four picks apiece.
LBSU libero Mason Briggs can now boast five All-Big West selections to his name, earning first team honors in both 2022 and now ’23 with honorable mention selections in 2020 and ’21. Briggs leads The Big West and rates seventh in the country in digs per set at 2.29. Briggs is looking to secure a fourth All-American honors to cap his career with the Beach, claiming first team distinction in each of the last two seasons.
Hitters Kyle Hobus of CSUN and UC Irvine’s Hilir Henno and middle blocker Guilherme Voss of Hawai’i are also repeat honorees with three distinctions to their name. CSUN team leader Hobus is in his redshirt season for the Matadors and paces the squad with 3.71 kills and 0.777 blocks per set. Henno is tops in the league in hitting percentage (.380), points per set (5.47) and aces per set (.441). The 5.47 points average leads national collegiate volleyball. Voss, a senior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is averaging 1.83 kills and 0.95 blocks per set, while hitting a .532 clip for third-seeded hosts from Hawai'i.
Four setters grace the list, with conference assists leader Brett Sheward of UC Irvine joined by Long Beach State’s Aidan Knipe, Hawai’i freshman Tread Rosenthal and Donovan Constable of CSUN making the listings. A 2023 selection while playing at Hawai’i, Sheward returned to the setter position and is averaging 10.64 assists and 1.75 digs per set. Knipe also posts double figure assist per set averaging 10.19, while Rosenthal is directing the Rainbow Warriors’ offensive efforts with 10.05 assists per set in a first season on the court. Rosenthal is the only first-year player to make the 2024 first team.
LBSU middle blocker Simon Torwie picks up a second first-team honor and is leading the Beach – and the country – in blocking. Torwie enters the postseason averaging 1.338 blocks per set. As a team, the Beach average 3.264 blocks to pace national collegiate volleyball. Torwie is joined by junior offensive threat Sotiris Siapanis, also a 2023 selection, who hits .341 with 3.13 kills per set.
Along with Henno and Sheward, UCI is represented on the listings by Max Grigoriev and Cole Power, both first-time all-league selections. Grigoriev is sixth in The Big West in hitting percentage (.335) and eighth in blocks (.890), while Power earns recognition after ranking second in dig average with a 1.96 mark.
