No. 5 Seed UC Davis and No. 7 Seed Long Beach State Advance Past First Round of 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Women's Basketball Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. -- No. 5 seed UC Davis defeated No. 8 seed Cal State Fullerton, 81-56, in the first round of the 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Women’s Basketball Championship, Wednesday at the Dollar Loan Center.

Aggie senior guard Evanne Turner scored a career-high 29 points shooting 11-for-15 from the floor and 7-for-10 from behind the arc. Turner's first seven attempts from distance were true, as the Fontana, Calif, native was one shy of the UC Davis individual three-point record.

The Titans were led by Fujika Nimmo’s 20 points in the collegiate finale.

 
UC Davis improves its overall record to 18-13. Cal State Fullerton’s season ends at 10-21.

The Aggies shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55) overall and 53.1 percent (17-of-32) from long distance. The 17 triples sets a new UCD program team best. UC Davis led wire-to-wire and had a 20-point lead, 46-26, at halftime. The Aggies stretched the margin to 76-46, their largest of the game, with 5:09 remaining in the contest. 

UC Davis takes on No. 4 seed Cal Poly in the second round of the Championship, set for Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

HENDERSON, Nev. -- No. 7 seed Long Beach State toppled No. 6 seed UC Santa Barbara, 90-56, in the first round of the 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Women’s Basketball Championship, Wednesday at the Dollar Loan Center.


The Beach had balanced scoring as six players scored in double figures, led by Savannah Tucker's 17 points. Sydney Woodley and Cheyenne Givens pitched in 16 points apiece. UC Santa Barbara was led by Alexis Whitfield's double-double of 30 points, 17 rebounds, and eight assists. Whitfield was one point shy of The Big West Championship record of 31 points (Mikah Maly-Karros, UC Irvine, 2010). 

The Beach's season continues as they improve their overall record to 14-17. The Gauchos conclude their campaign at 16-15. 

Long Beach State started the game on fire and put up the most points it has scored in a half to take a 20-point lead, 54-34, at halftime. The contest saw a string of season bests, including points in a half (54), total points (90), and threes in a game (10).

The Gauchos responded in the second half and cut the lead to one, 65-64, with 9:43 left in the game, but the Beach grew the gap back to double digits to prevail by 15 points. 


Long Beach State advances to take on No. 3 seed UC Riverside in Thursday's second round, with the two squaring off at Noon. The two split the regular-season series, with each side earning the victory in their home contest.
