Long Beach State senior Simon Torwie had a monster match for the Beach to earn Big West Men’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. A five-time defensive weekly honoree, this marks Torwie’s first league award of the offensive variety.

The middle blocker from Artà, Balearic Islands, Spain, knocked down 13 kills on 16 errorless swings to hit .812 as top-ranked LBSU defeated No. 15 Lewis, 3-1, on Friday. The 13 kills is a season high for the senior and matches a career-best set on Feb. 3, 2023.

Torwie also led the Beach with six blocks to go along with three digs and one ace in the contest to move LBSU’s season record to 13-1.

Nationally, Torwie is ranked seventh on the season in blocks per set (1.143).

Defensive Player of the Week

UC San Diego’s Josh Schellinger helped the Tritons to the 3-1 win in The Big West opener to claim Defensive Player of the Week honors. A four-time freshman honoree in 2023, this is Schellinger’s first career weekly defensive award.

Schellinger finished with a career-high seven blocks (one solo) to go along with eight digs, six kills, and a service ace in the home win against UC Santa Barbara.

All in all, the sophomore from Bloomingdale, Ill, accounted for 11 points as league play got underway.

Freshman of the Week

Hawai’i setter Tread Rosenthal picked up a fourth Big West Men’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week award after helping the Rainbow Warriors to a pair of tidy sweeps on the weekend.

The native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., averaged 10.75 assists, 1.00 digs, and 1.25 blocks per set along with three service aces in victorious home efforts over Missouri S&T.

In the series opener, Rosenthal finished with 19 assists and four blocks in just two sets played. Also taking to the court for two sets in the rematch, the freshman closed with 24 assists and three aces.

Rosenthal helped UH to a .440 hitting percentage in the series as third-ranked Hawai’i has now won their last 11 matches.

Rosenthal currently ranks first in The Big West in aces per set (.538) and is second in the league in assists per set (10.10). Both figures are good for ninth in the national rankings.
