Chakas and Rosenthal of Hawai'i, Long Beach State's Briggs Earn Men's Volleyball Weekly Awards

 
Offensive Player of the Week 
Spyros Chakas, Hawai'i | Senior • Outside Hitter • Nea Smyrni, Greece
  • 8036Spyros Chakas was an offensive force for Hawai’i in a pair of victorious efforts over No. 5 Stanford to claim a season’s first Big West Offensive Player of the Week award. Chakas was thrice tapped for weekly honors last season.  

  • Chakas recorded 38 total kills, or 5.43 per set, while hitting .550 in UH's two-match series sweep of Stanford. The senior also tallied two aces, 11 digs (1.57 avg.), and three blocks against the Cardinal.  

  • The native of Nea Smyrni, Greece, posted 15 kills, eight digs, and two blocks in the series opening four-set victory for the third-ranked UH squad.  

  • In the rematch, Chakas pounded a season-high 23 kills, with only one error in 30 attempts (.733 hitting %). The outside hitter has reached double-figures in kills in 8-of-9 matches played this season, including six straight.  

  • Chakas is currently third nationally for kills per set (4.29) and hitting percentage (.426) while ranking fifth in points per set (4.90) on the season. 

  • On Tuesday, Chakas was also awarded as AVCA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Player of the Week. This is the time Chakas has been tapped for weekly awards by both The Big West and the AVCA.

Defensive Player of the Week 
Mason Briggs, Long Beach State | Senior • Libero • Valencia, Calif.
  • 8042Long Beach State libero Mason Briggs helped the top-ranked Beach to a split with defending national champion and No. 4 UCLA to earn Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors. The award recognition is the second of the season and the sixth of Briggs’ career.  

  • The product of Valencia, Calif., recorded a total of 27 digs in the pair of matches, averaging 3.38 digs per set.  

  • Briggs logged 11 digs in a 3-1 win on Friday night, while adding four assists and totaling 34 receptions against only one error in the 3-1 decision in front of the sellout crowd of 4,303 fans at Walter Pyramid.  

  • Saturday at UCLA, Briggs registered a season-high 16 digs, while adding two assists and 33 receptions with just two reception errors in the four-set setback. 

  • Briggs is currently leading The Big West and ranks eighth in the country in digs per set, sporting a 2.37 average.

Freshman of the Week 
Tread Rosenthal, Hawai'i | Freshman • Setter • Manhattan Beach, Calif.
  • First-year setter Tread Rosenthal earned a third career Big West Freshman of the Week award after directing Hawai’i to a pair of home wins over Stanford.  

  • Rosenthal averaged 10.29 assists per set and guided the team to a .445 hitting percentage in the series over the Cardinal while also adding four aces, seven digs (1.00 avg.), and five blocks.  

  • The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native, recorded 39 assists, two aces, two kills, five digs, and three blocks in the 3-1 series-opening match.  

  • Rosenthal finished with 33 assists and led UH to a season-high .594 hitting percentage in the rematch with 44 kills and only three attack errors in 69 attempts for the ‘Bows. 

  • On the year, Rosenthal is averaging 10.03 assists per set to land in eighth in the country. With 18 service aces and a 0.514 per set average, Rosenthal rates 15th.
