IRVINE, Calif. - Regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Cal Poly secured a straight-set victory over fourth-seeded Long Beach State in the semifinal round of The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2024 Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship, Friday at the Bren Events Center. The match saw Cal Poly winning the sets 25-22, 25-20, and 25-20.
With the victory, the Mustangs improve to 22-8 on the season and advance to play the winner of the semifinal between No. 2 seed and defending champion Hawai'i and third-seeded UC Davis. LBSU closes the year at 19-11 under the direction of first-year head coach Natalie Reagan.
The first set between the Mustangs and the Beach started with Long Beach State taking the early lead with the first two points. Cal Poly quickly responded, leveling the score 3-3 after a kill by Breklyn Pulling. Notably, Cal Poly took a brief advantage with a series of kills by Lizzy Markovska, bringing the score to 10-8. Long Beach State regained some momentum, leading 21-19 after a service ace by senior Savana Chacon, but Cal Poly closed out the set with a four-point run, including a set-ending kill by redshirt senior Tommi Stockham, securing a 25-22 victory in the first set.
In the second set, Cal Poly took control early with a series of successful plays jumping out to a 9-5 advantage, and extended to 21-11 after a strike from Pulling. LBSU attempted a late rally, scoring four consecutive to stave off set point, but Chloe Leluge secured the set for the Mustangs with a decisive kill, ending the set 25-20 in favor of the Mustangs.
In the third set, LBSU jumped out to a 8-5 advantage after Natalie Glenn struck for a kill. Cal Poly mounted a comeback to knot the score at 13-all, and then grabbed the advantage when Amy Hiatt recorded the ensuing point. The Mustangs extended their lead to 20-15, with Pulling and Markovska contributing crucial points, and a strike from Leluge sealed the match victory.
Stockham led the match with 17 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the Mustangs. Pulling added 11 kills with a .375 hitting percentage. Samantha Callahan excelled in the primary setter position with 40 assists to facilitate the team's offense in the victory.
LBSU's Glenn led the Beach with 13 kills. Ella Lomigora recored a team and match best seven total blocks and Zayna Meyer finished with a 14-assist, 11-dig double-double.
