With the conclusion of the 2024 NCAA cross country season, The Big West is proud to announce this year’s award winners.
For the second year in a row, The Big West Men’s Athlete of the Year goes to Cal Poly’s
Davis Bove. The graduate student was the individual winner in the men’s 8K at The Big West Championship with a time of 23:51.3. Bove raced twice in the regular season, at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational (6th/22:56.5) and Wisconsin Pre-Nationals (15th/23:08.6). The Franklin, Tenn. native placed 38th at the NCAA West Region Championship, completing the 10K course in 29:55.0. It is the 15th time, third consecutive, that a Mustang has wont the league’s top men’s honor. Bove becomes one of 10 runners to win multiple Big West Athlete of the Year awards.
Cal Poly’s
Schuyler Gooley is the 2024 Big West Women’s Athlete of the Year. The senior was the individual champion in the women’s 6K at The Big West Championship, crossing the finish line in 19:47.7. Gooley competed in two meets during the regular season, at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational (39th/20:36.9) and Santa Clara Bronco Invitational (5th/20:34.9). The Hopkinton, Mass. product was 30th (20:24.3) at the NCAA West Region Championship. Gooley is the sixth individual from Cal Poly to win the Women’s Athlete of the Year honor.
Cal Poly’s
Rory Catsimanes is the Men’s Freshman of the Year. Catsimanes was the top rookie at the championship, coming in sixth place with a time of 23:59.8 for all-conference status. The native of San Clemente, Calif. ran in three regular season races, including a win at the Waves Invite (17:32.5), and was 45th (29:59.9) at the NCAA West Region Championship. Catsimanes is the 11th Mustang to be named the league's best men’s freshman.
Lucy Milliner of Hawai‘i wins the Women’s Freshman of the Year honor. Milliner was the top rookie, ninth overall, at The Big West Championship, finishing the course in 20:24.2 to earn all-conference status. The Woodbury, England product had four top 10 finishes during the regular season at the Big Wave Invitational (2nd/18:28.6), UC Riverside Invitational (10th/20:15.2), Charles Bowles Invitational (2nd/17:09.8) and Bronco Invitational (9th/20:49.9). Milliner is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn any Big West major cross country award.
Cal Poly’s
Ryan Vanhoy is the Men’s Coach of the Year. Vanhoy helmed the Mustangs to their 20th Big West title in program history, scoring a mere 22 points with five scorers in the top 10, led by Bove’s individual win. Cal Poly was the top team from the league at the NCAA West Region Championships, coming in eighth place with 235 points. It is Vanhoy’s third top coaching honor and 19th time that a Mustang head coach won the Men’s Coach of the Year.

Michelle Chewens is the Women’s Coach of the Year for the third straight year. Chewens led the Mustangs to their 10th Big West title in program history with four runners in the top 10, capped by an individual championship from Gooley, for a total of 33 points. Cal Poly had the best score out of teams in the league at the NCAA West Region Championships with 237 points and Tatiana Cornejo earned All-Region status by finishing in 25th place (20:14.6). It is the 10th time that Cal Poly has won the top coaching award.
