Juniors Godbold and Briggs of Long Beach State and Triton Rookie Garrison Earn Big West Men’s Volleyball Weekly Honors

  • Clarke Godbold led No. 4 Long Beach State to the sweep of its home-and-home series with No. 15 CSUN, averaging 5.50 points, 5.13 kills, 1.25 digs and 0.50 blocks per set to pick up a second Big West Offensive Player of the Week selection.
  • Godbold had a career night on Friday in a thrilling reverse sweep in Northridge, putting down a career- and match-high 32 kills to produce the new season best by a Big West student-athlete for 2023 (tied No. 6 nationally), surpassing UC San Diego senior Ryan Ka’s 31 versus Ball State back on March 5. It marked the first 30-kill performance for the Beach since 2010. The opposite hitter added seven digs and a block assist for a career-best 32.5 total points to lead all players.
  • In Saturday night’s sweep in Long Beach, Godbold finished with nine kills to share the team high, alongside three digs, three block assists and a service ace for 11.5 points.
  • Godbold hit .571 (32-4-49) in Northridge on a career-high 49 swings, .421 (9-1-19) in Long Beach, and .529 (41-5-68) for the series.
  • Godbold was both The Big West Offensive Player of the Week and AVCA National Player of the Week back on Jan. 30. The San Pedro product is the only Beach standout to earn the league’s offensive award in 2023. Godbold was The Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 24, 2022, and a three-time Big West Freshman of the Week in 2021.

  • All-American libero Mason Briggs anchored No. 4 Long Beach State’s defense in two wins over No. 15 CSUN over the weekend to nab a fourth career Big West Defensive Player of the Week award.
  • Briggs averaged 3.13 digs per set as the Beach have now won six straight matches for the third time in 2023, and sit in a first-place tie with Hawai’i heading into the final week of the regular season.
  • The fourth-year junior first collected a match- and season-high 18 digs, two shy of a new career best, in Friday’s reverse sweep in Northridge, to go along with two set assists. Briggs made just one error on 34 service receptions.
  • Saturday night’s sweep in Long Beach saw Briggs get to a team-high seven more digs with one set assist, while again committing a solitary error over 19 serve receives.
  • Briggs’ prior Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors came earlier this season on Jan. 23, and back-to-back last year on March 28 and April 4. The Beach have laid claim to a league-high seven of the 14 defensive awards in 2023, through three different standouts.

  • Jim Garrison aided UC San Diego to a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Senior Night Friday at LionTree Arena, for a first Big West Freshman of the Week distinction.
  • The product of Manhattan Beach and 2021 graduate of Mira Costa High School posted a match- and career-high seven total blocks (one solo) and attacked at a .750 rate through six kills on eight swings with no errors, for a season-high 10.0 total points.
  • A rookie middle blocker, Garrison’s previous single-match high was six denials (one solo) at CSUN on March 16.
  • The five-set triumph broke a 23-match losing streak for UC San Diego against UC Santa Barbara, including nine straight in La Jolla, going back to a 3-0 home victory over a decade ago on Feb. 15, 2013.
  • Garrison gives UC San Diego five Big West Freshman of the Week selections for 2023, with Josh Schellinger a three-time recipient and Evan Boyle the initial winner back on Jan. 9. UC Irvine also has five such awards to date, from two players.
