UC Davis’ Brown, UCR’s Garewal and LBSU’s Medellin Garner Big West Softball Weekly Distinction

30643• Fourth-year junior Kenedi Brown went 2-0 with a spotless 0.00 ERA this weekend during UC Davis’ Capital Classic, earning a seventh career Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week honor.

• Brown struck out 14 over 13.0 scoreless innings pitched and only surrendered five hits, all singles, and three walks. The right-hander posted a two-hit shutout (4-0) over Alabama State on Friday afternoon before combining with Taylor Fitzgerald on a three-hit blanking (5-0) of Southern Utah on Sunday, and held opponents to a .119 batting average.

• Brown’s week began with a three-inning start (2 ER, 3 K) at 14th-ranked Pac-12 powerhouse Stanford on Wednesday. The Elk Grove native now has a 6-2 win-loss mark for 2023, with a 1.35 ERA.

• Brown was a three-time Big West Pitcher of the Week in both 2021 (March 8, April 12 and April 26) and 2022 (Feb. 14, Feb. 21, March 14).

30639• Lauryn Garewal slashed .667/.700/.778 in a 3-0 weekend for UC Riverside at its own Amy S. Harrison Classic to notch a first career Big West Softball Player of the Week award.

• The fourth-year senior and Highlander leadoff batter hit .667 (6-for-9) with five runs, a double, three RBI, a walk, and five steals on five attempts for the week.

• The native of Banning was 4-for-4 in an 8-0 run-rule victory over Howard to conclude play on Friday, with three runs, two RBI and career-hihj-tying three stolen bases. Garewal opened the scoring with a theft of home plate in the third before adding RBI singles in the fourth and sixth and scoring the walk-off game-ender later in that same frame.

• Garewal started the three games at second base and handled all eight defensive chances cleanly without an error. Following the weekend, Garewal ranks in the top 10 in The Big West in batting (.420), runs (13), hits (21), doubles (five) and steals (six).

• Garewal is UCR’s first Big West Field Player of the Week since current teammate Nadia Witt on March 9, 2020, just before the pandemic.

30641• Makayla Medellin led Long Beach State in batting last week, hitting .385 (5-for-13) with three runs, a pair of doubles, one RBI and a stolen base across four games during the San Diego Classic, to grab a second Big West Freshman of the Week distinction already.

• The Yorba Linda product went 3-for-3 in Saturday’s narrow 2-0 loss to Boston University. Medellin was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, including what proved to be the decider, in Friday’s initial meeting with the Terriers, a 5-1 Beach victory.

• Medellin, a 2022 graduate of Yorba Linda High School made 10 clean putouts defensively while starting three times in left field and once in right in Saturday's tourney finale for LBSU.

• Medellin’s first Big West Freshman of the Week award came after a stellar college debut during the season’s first weekend, on Feb. 13.
